Forskolin, the highly-purified active compound in ViaPure® Coleus, has been extensively studied because it has the unique ability to activate adenylate cyclase by directly binding to it. Adenylate cyclase is an enzymatic complex that converts ATP to cyclic-AMP, a signaling molecule that initiates numerous cellular responses. Directly activating the enzyme responsible for the production of cyclic-AMP prevents undesirable side effects associated with indirect approaches to the same goal.
ViaPure® Coleus has been shown to stimulate many markers of keratinocyte differentiation, leading to an increased production of skin lipids, a thicker stratum corneum and an improved skin barrier overall.
By elevating intracellular cAMP levels, ViaPure® Coleus also has a positive effect on the cells’ response to UV energy. It has been shown to both prevent and repair DNA damage in basal keratinocytes.
In addition, forskolin is known to stimulate lipolysis (fat breakdown), making it an excellent ingredient for anti-cellulite products.
